  • Headwind increases consumption until 8% with a speed of 18 km/h and until 18% with a speed of 36 km/h in a vehicle with baffles on the cabin roof. An atmospheric temperature drop around 10 ºC increases consumption of about a 4%.
  • To benefit from the vehicle inertia , leave the throttle and keep going with the gear engaged. In this way you will circulate with no consumption. If you brake and accelerate, you lose this inertia.

9 key points of efficient driving of industrial vehicles

The IDAE’s Manual of Efficient Driving for drivers of industrial vehicles includes a resume of driving techniques that enable consumption reduction, emission reduction and improvement in driving safety.


It’s very important for the driver to know the intervals in which his vehicle reach the maximum torque and the maximum power, as well as the engines curves, to adapt his driving style to them. For more details, see paragraph 3 TECHNOLOGY OF MOTORS AND VEHICLES in the Manual.

It is recommended to start engine without accelerating and to wait a minute. Set the tachograph and start the vehicle, waiting for pressure tanks to have enough pressure.


Yo can start the vehicle, with reports adapted to every situation (load, slope, climate, etc.), without forcing the clutch unnecessarily. In ascending slope, start with the first gear, short or long, depending on the type of vehicle and the road conditions.


It’s recommended to change gear in the maximum revs zone (green zone). After changing, keep the motor in the maximum revs zone.

If there are favorable conditions, you have to change gears approximately:

  • Changing medium gears, around 1.400 r/min in big motors (of 10-12 litres).
  • Changing entire gears, about 1.600 revs in 10-12 liters motors and between 1.700 and 1.900 r/min in less powerful motors.
  • Changing quickly and accelerate after changing. There will not be dual clutch.


When it’s possible, you can skip the gear, during acceleration and deceleration.

Select the gear that enable the motor to work in the low side of the maximum torque revs interval. In other words, with longest gears and the throttle pressed by three-quarters of its range.

In automatic, it will be synchronized the longest march using the throttle. Circulation develops approximately:

  • Around 1.100-1.300 r/min in big motors (10-12 liters).
  • Between 1.300-1.700 r/min in less power motors.


Try to maintain a stable speed during circulation avoiding to accelerate and to brake unnecessarily. Take advantage from vehicle inertia.


Before any deceleration or obstacle on the road, stop to accelerate and use the inertia with the engaged gear, or if possible, a longer one. In these conditions the fuel consumption of the vehicle is zero (low revs close to minimum) Use more the brake motor, avoiding the service brake without real need.


In extended stops (more than 2 minutes) turn off the engine, except for those vehicles depending on continuous operation of the motor for a correct usage of auxiliary services. During stops, after parking, it’s already passed a sufficient time for revolutions to decrease and you can switch off the engine without waiting any longer.


To foresee traffic circumstances, and before them, anticipating the actions. Maintain the safe distance with other vehicles accelerating less, in order to brake less. Check regularly vehicles ahead.


In the most of cases the previously rules are applicable, but they do exist particular circumstances where are required specific different actions in order to not affect the safety. Where it’s required, accelerate the vehicle to reach an high revolution, changing gears in of revs interval of maximum power, with the highest acceleration.
