Efficient Driving Schemes in the goods transport by road

efficient driving with GesInFlot

Efficient driving in the road transport is not a trend, but a powerful instrument that enables to improve the competition of a company. Its application is analyzed by the driving data enabled by the fleet management system and the correct drivers formation.

The energy consumption affects both the road transport sector and global calculation, representing the 15% of consumption , as well as in the structure of the company costs, reaching a 30% of the road expenses . For this reason, any solution able to decrease these figures, will affect in a decidedly the competition, performance and sustainability improvement of the sector and of the company and freelances.

What’s the Efficient Driving?

Efficient driving is based on knowing and adopting a variety of techniques appropriated to any situation on the road (road type, speed limit, recommended speed, traffic…), together with the specific characteristics of your vehicle, the weight and the distribution of the load and the weather conditions.

The benefits obtained with the application of these techniques could involve an average savings of 10% in fuel consumption and in maintenance. Furthermore, efficient driving produces benefits such as:

  • Global energy saving for the sector and the country.
  • Reduction in CO2 emissions (carbon dioxide) and in air pollution
  • Economy saving in fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Driving stress decreasing and driving safety increasing.
  • comfort and driving stress decreasing.
  • Risk reduction and seriousness of the accident.

Efficient driving is a ” dynamic style of driving , that includes the ability to adapt to the technological improvements of the modern industrial vehicles for a better usage”.

Key steps to obtain these benefits are three:

  1. To identify the aspects to be improved regarding driving of any employee with any vehicle. This information can be stored by fleet management system such as GesInFlot and compared to the average in order to see deviations, and it can improve the most relevant aspects of every driver, with a more customized formation.
  2. To maintain the vehicle in perfect condition. To realize required maintenance and to keep updated all the revisions.
  3. Practice and internalization of techniques and instruments of efficient driving. It’s absolutely necessary that driver had a practice formation period including general techniques of efficient formation, and the specifications of his vehicle and his habits. Enabling him to improve his skills. Practicing mustn’t be replaced by a manual, even though it’s an additional element.

Recommendations for an efficient driving of camion

Some recommendations collected by IDAE (Energy Saving and Diversification Institute):

  • The good driving style of the driver , keeping a safe distance and a large visual field staying alert enable to optimize the driving style.
  • Before starting to travel it’s important that the driver takes a visual exam on the most generic aspects of the vehicle: liquids level, braking systems, aid to driving equipment (including the fleet management system), fixing and mounting devices, tires and spare parts conditions.
  • Spoilers and baffles on the cabin roof reduce enough the consumption, reaching saving average amounts of about 6% and more than 10% at the speed of 90 km/h.
  • The minimum consumption is obtained with the motor in zone of minimum specific consumes (green zone of the rev counter) and with low demand of power, minimizing the revs without leaving the green zone.
  • Headwind increases consumption until 8% with a speed of 18 km/h and until 18% with a speed of 36 km/h in a vehicle with baffles on the cabin roof. An atmospheric temperature drop around 10 ºC increases consumption of about a 4%.
  • To benefit from the vehicle inertia , leave the throttle and keep going with the gear engaged. In this way you will circulate with no consumption. If you brake and accelerate, you lose this inertia.

What GesInFlot offers to improve the efficient driving

GesInFlot dispose of productivity reports for every vehicle and driver, with history of consume, to compare tendencies.

Detailed reports of any FMS parameter and vehicle/driver note Report help to see quickly deviations of some drivers on his colleagues and on which point of driving style you need to focus the formation to correct its mistakes.

9 key points of efficient driving of industrial vehicles

The IDAE’s Manual of Efficient Driving for drivers of industrial vehicles includes a resume of driving techniques that enable consumption reduction, emission reduction and improvement in driving safety.

1 PROPERTIES OF THE MOTOR

It’s very important for the driver to know the intervals in which his vehicle reach the maximum torque and the maximum power, as well as the engines curves, to adapt his driving style to them. For more details, see paragraph 3 TECHNOLOGY OF MOTORS AND VEHICLES in the Manual.

It is recommended to start engine without accelerating and to wait a minute. Set the tachograph and start the vehicle, waiting for pressure tanks to have enough pressure.

2 STARTING VEHICLE

Yo can start the vehicle, with reports adapted to every situation (load, slope, climate, etc.), without forcing the clutch unnecessarily. In ascending slope, start with the first gear, short or long, depending on the type of vehicle and the road conditions.

3 CHANGING GEAR

It’s recommended to change gear in the maximum revs zone (green zone). After changing, keep the motor in the maximum revs zone.

If there are favorable conditions, you have to change gears approximately:

  • Changing medium gears, around 1.400 r/min in big motors (of 10-12 litres).
  • Changing entire gears, about 1.600 revs in 10-12 liters motors and between 1.700 and 1.900 r/min in less powerful motors.
  • Changing quickly and accelerate after changing. There will not be dual clutch.

4 GEARS SKIPPING

When it’s possible, you can skip the gear, during acceleration and deceleration.

Select the gear that enable the motor to work in the low side of the maximum torque revs interval. In other words, with longest gears and the throttle pressed by three-quarters of its range.

In automatic, it will be synchronized the longest march using the throttle. Circulation develops approximately:

  • Around 1.100-1.300 r/min in big motors (10-12 liters).
  • Between 1.300-1.700 r/min in less power motors.

5 UNIFORM SPEED CIRCULATION

Try to maintain a stable speed during circulation avoiding to accelerate and to brake unnecessarily. Take advantage from vehicle inertia.

6 DECELERATIONS

Before any deceleration or obstacle on the road, stop to accelerate and use the inertia with the engaged gear, or if possible, a longer one. In these conditions the fuel consumption of the vehicle is zero (low revs close to minimum) Use more the brake motor, avoiding the service brake without real need.

7 STOPS AND PARKINGS

In extended stops (more than 2 minutes) turn off the engine, except for those vehicles depending on continuous operation of the motor for a correct usage of auxiliary services. During stops, after parking, it’s already passed a sufficient time for revolutions to decrease and you can switch off the engine without waiting any longer.

8 FORECAST AND ANTICIPATION

To foresee traffic circumstances, and before them, anticipating the actions. Maintain the safe distance with other vehicles accelerating less, in order to brake less. Check regularly vehicles ahead.

9 DEMANDING CIRCUMSTANCES

In the most of cases the previously rules are applicable, but they do exist particular circumstances where are required specific different actions in order to not affect the safety. Where it’s required, accelerate the vehicle to reach an high revolution, changing gears in of revs interval of maximum power, with the highest acceleration.
